French top women’s football league club Montpellier Herault Sport have unveiled Malawian star Rose Kabzere.
The former Ascent Academy player joined the team after signing a three-year deal and passing a medical test.
Football Association of Malawi said Kabzere has made history in Malawi for securing a deal to one of top five leagues in Europe.
Reads the statement: “Congratulations to Rose Kabzere on officially joining Montpellier Hérault Sport Club in France’s top women’s league on a three-year deal!
“Rose, a two-time FAM National Women’s Championship Player of the Year, has made history as the first-ever Malawian footballer, male or female, to secure a direct professional move to one of Europe’s top five leagues.
“We are proud of you, Rose, and wish you tremendous success in this exciting new chapter of your career.”
Kabzere did not participate in the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) Women’s Champions League Council for Southern Africa Football Associations qualifiers held at Mpira Stadium in Blantyre because she was working on the France move.
She scored 21 goals in Ascent’s maiden Central Region Women’s Football League title win and Montpellier spotted her last year during trials with Mamelodi Sundowns Women of South Africa.
Kabzere made her national team debut in 2022 and was nominated for the inaugural Cosafa Women’s Promising Player Awards alongside her Ascent teammate Leticia Chinyamula.
Chinyamula won for inspiring Malawi to win their first title last year.
She has joined Malawi National Team captain Tabitha Chawinga who sealed a deal to French top league club Olympique Lyonnais after impressing at PSG.
