Health authorities in Nsanje say there is a decrease in the unsafe abortions in the district.
Coordinator for Post-Abortion Care for Nsanje District Health Officer Edina Samata has disclosed.
Speaking to ProjectM, she said from January to August this year Nsanje has registered 196 cases of unsafe abortions a decrease from 554 last year in the same period representing a 35.38 percent.
She attributes the reduction is because of the interventions by different players who have assisted to revamp access to Sexual Reproductive Health and Safe Abortion in Nsanje.
“The district hospital at the Boma, Trinity in Nsanje North and Kalemba Community Rural Hospital respectively are topping cases of unsafe abortions in Nsanje,” said the coordinator.
Programmes Manager for Kachere Progressive Women’s Group, Fyness Chiwanda said the people in the hard-to-reach areas have challenges in getting post-abortion care services and Sexual Reproductive Health messages.
She said: “There is a need to engage the media to assist in passing the information on the same.”
Kachere Progressive Women’s Group is implementing a 12-month project called Pamoja with resources from Amplified Change.
