Namizimu Forest Reserve, a captivating natural site nestled within the scenic landscapes of Mangochi District is a treasure of breathtaking tourist attraction that perfectly captures the country’s natural beauty and cultural richness.
Namizimu, which means the Place of Spirits, is one of the beautiful mountains in the country where people strongly believe the spirits of the dead people linger.
The beautiful forest reserve, founded two decades ago, receives a splendid sunset every evening and this provides visitors with opportunities to explore the area through several short hiking trails, making it a spot for those seeking a peaceful retreat into nature.
According to Francis Polinyu Banda, a journalist from Mpima Village, Traditional Authority Mponda in Mangochi District, has told ProjectM that the country’s tourism treasure is a beautiful reserve with breathtaking views of Lake Malawi, Lake Malombe and the source of Malawi’s biggest and longest Shire River.
Banda said: “Given its immense value to the nation safeguarding this natural treasure, it is not just an environmental sanctuary but an economic necessity for Malawi and its people.
“This mesmerising geological wonder has been captivating visitors since its inception. It is a stunning natural haven and home to different animal species including Red eyed pigeons, Fish eagles, Monkeys, Baboons as well as mineral resources.”
He said the combination of history significance and breathtaking scenery appeal, makes it a fascinating destination for tourists and travellers alike.
It is also believed that in the early 60’s some famous people, including politicians used Namizimu Forest Reserve as a hiding place and would stay in the protected area for several months as nobody would dare to comb the area for fear of spirits.
Namizimu Forest Reserve, which is at an estimated 1500 feet above Lake Malawi, is a destination much better than many other destinations.
