First lady Madame Monica Chakwera has called on communities to take the leading role in empowering women and girls in the fight against cybercrime.
The first lady spoke on Tuesday during the opening of a three-day second edition of the 2024 Women and Girls Conference at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC), in Lilongwe.
According to Chakwera, innovators and leaders, women possess unique skills and perspectives that are essential in combating cybercrime.
“We want men and women to work together in combating digital threats. Male counterparts will join us in this endeavor. This conference gives us an opportunity to brainstorm best practices and new practices in order to spearhead cyber security”, she said.
Minister of Information and Digitisation, Moses Kunkuyu said government is committed to ensuring that girls actively engage in the digital space in a safe manner.
“Women and girls are the most vulnerable such spaces conversations gives a platform to look into government’s policies and regulations aimed at enabling our girls to voice out on the ills that are facing in the cyber domain,” he said.
Meanwhile, Malawi Communication Regulatory Authority (Macra) Board chairperson, Bridget Chibwana said the conference is very crucial, saying it will create a conducive environment where young girls and women can explore various career paths and opportunities in cybersecurity.
“By empowering young women we are ensuring the realisation of Malawi 2063 Vision which seeks to promote Malawi into self reliant nation,” she said.
Macra is hosting a three-day women and girls in cyber.
The second edition of the conference is being held under the theme; Insipiring the next generation: empowering future women cybersecurity professionals.
