As one way of promoting waste management, a Rumphi based youthful grouping operating under the banner “Waste Management Campaign” on Friday organized a special training for learners from Chimusi Primary School.
Among others, learners were trained on how they can collect and recycle waste products around their school and surrounding community.
Waste Management Campaign team leader Alinafe Velemu told ProjectM on the sidelines of the function that the learners were also given samples of products the organisation has been producing using waste products.
“We did different activities such as teaching learners about good waste management and waste recycling skills,” said Velemu.
The grouping together with learners also held a cleanup exercise surrounding the school.
“The waste materials we collected through the cleanup exercise, were used to train the learners on how they can manufacture products such as charcoal briquettes, flip charts and learning materials,” said Velemu.
Deputy headteacher of the school Nicholas Mwamlowe thanked Waste Management Campaign for organising the function, urging the grouping to formally introduce a waste management club at the school.
“Initiatives like these need to be encouraged because they are capable of raising awareness in our children on conserving the environment,” he said.
Hebert Gondwe, a Standard Four learner at the school said he was excited with the knowledge he has gained from the training.
Meanwhile, Waste Management Campaign group has promised to continue organising similar trainings targeting other primary schools in Rumphi District.
