1,000 Dowa Households Get Solar PowerBy Thokozani Mnolo

Opulence Malawi has connected over 1,000 households across nine villages in Dowa to solar energy,the villages, which fall under Senior Chief Chakhaza and TA Mulalo, can now access electricity, marking a significant milestone in the third phase of the Solar Village for Quality Education project.

The project, launched in 2022, aims to provide clean energy to communities in need,according to Okkifi Dimba, Programmes Officer for Opulence Malawi, the organisation has managed to power over 5,000 homes and schools since the project started.

“The initiative is part of Opulence Malawi’s efforts to improve living standards in rural areas through access to clean energy,” explained Dimba.

The solar systems were installed by trained youth from surrounding communities, in an effort to promote local ownership and sustainability, the project has brought numerous benefits to the communities, including enabling children to study after sunset and families to stay connected.

Misiyasi Banda from Senior Chief Chakhadza said he was pleased with the initiative, saying his children pays more attention to school work and they study even at home with the lights.

“All I can say is thanks Opulence Malawi. It wasn’t easy for us during our dark nights,” said Banda.

Dimba said access to clean energy was a catalyst for transformation, the project has lit up homes and schools.
