Through the lens of innovation, Pakel Patrick Chikoja, an IT specialist from 6 miles in Zomba, has made a mini-tractor to boost farming in the country.
Aged 38, Chikoja holds an advanced Diploma in Computer Engineering obtained in 2009.
The computer and Engineering expert told ProjectM that he started this incredible journey in Botswana a few years ago when he was working at a garage and used to participate in racing car competitions.
The racing driver said it was at this garage where he found his experience in vehicle towing and recovery, manufacturing of off-road vehicles, trailers fabrication.
“When I came back home, I opened my company called Extreme Rhino Engineering and a panel beater and spray painting garage where the manufacturing is done. We are looking at incorporating advanced technologies to boost efficiency, productivity and sustainability in the agricultural sector,” he said.
The Extreme Rhino and Engineering CEO said the machinery can be equipped with various implements to prepare the soil for planting seeds using planter attachment, harvesting and others.
The renowned entrepreneur said: “It took us three months to build it, but if we may have materials such as metal benders and metal cutters we can build a mini tractor within 20 days. There is a growing need for skilled professionals to drive economic growth and development of this country.
“Recognising this, that is why I established my company where manufacturing of different items including mini tractors will be done. Young people from technical colleges are encouraged to come and develop their creativity and explore opportunities to start their own businesses and become self reliant.”
He said the company has employed 11 permanent workers.
The 6 Miles-based innovator adds that his company makes a profit of at least K3 million per month.
”In other countries, such as China people are encouraged to exploit their talent at an early age because this encourages innovative thinking and develop essential skills for success in various areas of life. This also helps them reach their full potential leading to a more purposeful and successful life,” he concluded.
Meanwhile, Steven Sean Hamis aged 25, Mangochi is among those doing internship programme at Extreme Rhino Engineering company.
He said the place has provided an opportunity for him basing his educational experience and develop his professional skills.
“We are learning a lot such as panel beating and quality spray painting and many more. My message to young Malawians is that they should begin to learn new skills and gain practical insights that will help them move further in this rapidly evolving world,” he added
