ZOA FALLS, A POPULAR TOURIST ATTRACTION FOR MALAWI AND MOZAMBIQUE

The magnificent ZOA Falls located along Ruo River at Thekerani in Thyolo District, stand as one of the most popular tourist attractions for both Malawi and Mozambique.

The waterfalls has also an important geographical feature as it forms the border between Malawi and the republic of Mozambique.

According to Mrs. Severiya Chiundo from Mitepera Village, Traditional Authority Mbawira in Thyolo District, it is at ZOA Falls where all the souls of the ancestors and the gods of Africa rest.

Chiundo told ProjectM that the trail is a historic waterfall where ancient people used to worship their gods and observe their rituals.

She said: “It is a wonderful adventure that provides visitors with a glimpse into the past and a breathtaking natural wonder that should be on every traveller’s must-go list.

Its water, which is sourced from the springs beneath the rocks, is refreshingly cold and potable. The cascading waves of this famous attraction, bring with it rainbow formation against a sunny backdrop.

Chiundo elaborated that if the area gets a big boost from infrastructure projects, it will attract businesses and investments.

Commenting on the matter, Ganizani Felix, a primary school teacher from Thekerani in Thyolo District, said that the place needs to be marketed enough to Malawians and international tourists adding that with continued investment and government support, ZOA Falls has the potential to become a major tourism destination for the nation.

He said: “It is not just a destination, but an experience that showcases the untouched beauty of Malawi and perfect for adventures.

“The most interesting part of this area is that its water doesn’t even make it to the ground, before turning into mist, making it perfect for a rejuvenating dip.”

Felix has described the ZOA Falls as Malawi’s hidden gem with potential to boost local tourism in the country.

“As the World celebrates tourism month, let’s come together and make a real-life difference for our environment and build a sustainable future for tourism.

“Therefore, when we think about economic development, we need to project the tourism potential of this landscape through all eco-tourism programmes and revamp the tourism policy to grow the sector,” he said.

To make it an excellent destination for travellers and tourists, there is a need for them to include the ZOA Falls to boost Malawi’s tourism industry.
