Amid serious environmental risk being posed by unsustainable dumping of waste in the country’s towns and major trading centers, a grouping calling itself “Waste Management Campaign” has started a recycling campaign aimed at reducing the threat of wastes.
Among others, the Rumphi based organization is collecting wastes which is then being carefully sorted and recycled into Plastic bricks, Plates, cutting boards, Technical drawing boards, manure and Wonder bags, just to mention a few.
Team leader for the grouping Alinafe Velemu has told ProjectM that the initiative was launched in January 2024.
“As a grouping, we came up with this idea after noticing the growing problem waste products are posing on our environment,” Velemu said.
The grouping collects refuse such as plastic bags that are then melted and moulded into building blocks, plates and assorted teaching materials.
“The products we are producing here are all made of wastes, we are utilizing waste products that other people think are now useless,” said Velemu.
The grouping is also promoting the use of organic fertilizer which is also produced at their workshop in Rumphi.
The manure is produced by carefully mixing biodegradable wastes collected from various houses in the district.
Currently, plans are underway to to set-up workshops across the country.
“Soon, we are going to establish permanent workshops in Rumphi and Lilongwe which our teams are going to be using in manufacturing various products,” He said.
Currently, some of the products are being sold to people around Rumphi with plans at an advanced stage to start distributing in other districts.
The grouping’s vision is to see communities adopt sustainable ways of dumping wastes.
Environmental expert Chifuno Stephens has since urged the grouping to launch the compaign nationwide for the message to cut across.
