Young Malawian Activist Fights Climate Change

Maria Kamata, a 22-year-old environmental activist from Kasungu, is making waves in the fight against climate change through her organisation, the Mudzi Cooking Project.

Kamata provides sustainable energy solutions to local communities, promoting environmental conservation, and empowering women and young girls.

Kamata’s journey as an environmental activist started in 2019 when she volunteered as a facilitator at Nature Kit.

Her passion for the environment grew, and she established the Mudzi Cooking Project in 2022.

The project focuses on teaching women and young girls to make fuel briquettes and construct efficient stoves, conducting awareness campaigns, and providing sustainable energy solutions to local households.

“I witnessed many women and young girls struggling to find fire wood, and I knew I had to step in with a better and healthier source of cooking, my goal is to reach out to as many people as possible by the end of 2025, with at least 90% of Malawi’s population having sustainable means of cooking,” said Kamata.

According to Kamata since the establishment in 2022 she has reached over 10,000 people with efficient stoves and 20,000 with fuel briquettes.

Her initiative has not only improved the health and well-being of local communities but also contributed to reducing carbon emissions and promoting environmental sustainability.

Kamata is currently pursuing a diploma in General Agriculture at Mwimba College of Agriculture.

Despite facing challenges, including reliance on random funders, Kamata remains committed to her cause.

“I hope to see the Mudzi Cooking Project become self-sustainable in 2025, I am working tirelessly to secure permanent funding and expand our reach to more communities,” said Kamata.

According to environmental activist Chidombe Msisya, Kamata’s dedication to environmental conservation and sustainable energy solutions is an inspiration to many.

As Malawi continues to grapple with the challenges of climate change, young activists have taken the charge to address the issue.
