At just 23 years old, Mervis Mumba from Area 23 in Lilongwe has turned a simple idea into a thriving cleaning services business.
Still living with her parents, Mervis started the business out of necessity after facing serious financial challenges.
One day, while doing her own laundry, she had an idea to offer laundry and cleaning services to others for a fee. That is how her journey began.
Today, Mervis offers a wide range of cleaning services, including laundry, ironing, general cleaning, and deep cleaning for homes and offices. Her target clients are mostly busy professionals who barely have time for house chores and offices that require thorough cleaning from time to time.
While she handles most of the work herself, Mervis hires extra hands when there’s a lot to be done. She admits that getting customers at the beginning was tough, as few people knew about her business.
But thanks to social media, particularly TikTok, she gained visibility and attracted a good number of clients.
One of her biggest achievements so far was securing her first-ever office cleaning gig. Not only was the pay the largest amount she had ever earned, but she also hired seven people for the job.
People who, like her, didn’t have stable incomes. It was a moment of pride and joy, knowing her business was making an impact beyond just herself.
