In the heart of Khomani Village, just beyond Bunda College in Lilongwe, a young farmer is carving out a unique path in Malawi’s agricultural sector.
Andrew Thom, driven by vision and determination, has ventured into turkey rearing, which is a promising business in the country and is already making remarkable success.
Andrew started his turkey farming in 2021 after recognising the untapped potential in raising turkeys.
“Turkey farming isn’t common here, and I knew that gave me an advantage. I was confident I could attract more customers and make good profits compared to other types of farming.”
His instincts proved right. His first sale brought in more money than he had anticipated and the positive feedback from his customers only strengthened his resolve.
“The people who bought from me kept encouraging me and their support motivated me to keep going,” he said.
Like any business, turkey farming has its challenges. Andrew has struggled with poultry diseases like turkey pox, which sometimes affects his flock even after vaccinations. Transportation and a lack of proper housing for his birds have also been obstacles.
Finding a reliable market was another initial hurdle, but Andrew found a solution through online platforms.
He said: “Selling through Facebook has made a huge difference. During the festive season, especially in December, demand skyrockets as people buy turkeys for Christmas celebrations. These days, some even buy them just to add beauty to their homes.”
One of his regular customers, Walusungu Gondwe, expressed appreciation for Andrew’s work: “I’m always satisfied with the business I do with Andrew. He is consistent, and the quality of his turkeys is excellent. I’ll try my very best to recommend him to other people.”
Andrew’s love for farming extends beyond turkeys. He grows maize, soya and cabbages and raises pigs, rabbits, local chickens, Muscovy ducks and guinea fowl.
Despite his involvement in various forms of agriculture, his main focus remains on expanding his turkey business.
His long-term goal is to become a leading supplier of turkey and turkey matures while diversifying into other businesses when the opportunity arises.
His passion for farming is rooted in his education. Andrew attended the Natural Resources College, where he studied Animal Health and Production. Unfortunately, financial constraints forced him to leave before completing his studies. But his knowledge and determination kept him moving forward.
For those considering a career in farming, Andrew offers advice: “You need three key things: capital, proper land management, and reliable labour. With these in place, you can succeed.”
As he continues to grow his business and pursue his dreams, Andrew Thom stands as an inspiration—proving that hard work, creativity and resilience, can help an individual to defy the odds to succeed.
