Young Entrepreneur Thrives in Soap Manufacturing

Lewis Munthali, a 24-year-old entrepreneur from Chilumba in Karonga has etched a name for himself in the soap manufacturing industry.

Despite holding a diploma in Shipping and Logistics Management, Munthali discovered his passion for soap-making after watching YouTube videos. His interest was sparked when he stumbled upon a group of people manufacturing soap in Lilongwe’s Area 36.

Munthali’s determination and resourcefulness led him to teach himself the skills needed to produce high-quality laundry bar soap.

He spent a week watching YouTube videos before meeting David Ramsey Tembo, who sold him the necessary materials to start his business. With the help of his little brother, Munthali produces over 1,500 tablets of Chapa Soap per week.

“I’m proud of what I have achieved so far. My goal is to have a big soap manufacturing company where I can employ my fellow youths, I want to be a positive impact to the community and my fellow youths,” explained Munthali

Despite facing challenges due to the high cost of materials, Munthali remains committed to his business. He acknowledges that the profit margins have decreased compared to when he started in November 2023.

“Paying school fees for my young brother is the best thing I have achieved. I do this business for my survival, I sell the products at home with the help of my family and friends,” added Munthali.

One of Munthali’s satisfied customers, who wished to remain anonymous, praised the quality of the Chapa Soap. “I have  been using Lewis’s soap for months now, and I’m impressed with the quality and affordability. It’s a great product that gets the job done,” the customer said.

Munthali has further indicated that as he continues to navigate the challenges of running a business, his determination and resourcefulness will remain key to his success.
With his passion for soap-making and commitment to employing others.
