Titus Tsilizani Malakwa, a young and ambitious entrepreneur in Lilongwe, is making waves in Malawi’s ceramic industry with his innovative company, Kutsidya Pottery and Resource.
Located in Area 44 and founded in 2020, Kutsidya Pottery and Resource is a 100% Malawian-owned business that produces high-quality ceramic products, including plates, mugs, toilet seats, sanitary sinks, statues, bobbin insulators, tiles and flower vases.
Titus, a graduate of Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST), identified a gap in the market for locally produced ceramic products to venture into ceramic products enterprise.
“I saw an opportunity to create jobs, reduce import reliance and contribute to Malawi’s economic growth It started as a hobby but it’s not longer a hobby,” said Titus.
Kutsidya Pottery and Resource has already made significant strides in international and local markets with its durable products and customised designs proving popular among hotels, lodges, individuals, construction companies and institutions.
The company’s impact extends beyond the ceramic industry, creating employment opportunities for 14 people, comprising 4 full-time workers and 10 casual labourers.
“We source our materials locally from different districts, supporting Malawi’s economy,” Titus said.
The company uses a wide range of natural materials, including, Clay, Quartz, Feldspar and Kayn just to mention but a few and their weekly production capacity of approximately 500 items.
“Our goal is to become a leading nation-wide distributor of Malawi-made ceramic products,” said Titus.
With plans to expand its export base by 2025, Kutsidya Pottery and Resource is set to put Malawi on the global ceramic map.
Clinton Senzani, who once bought items from Kusiya Pottery is impressed with the quality of the products.
“I used to doubt Malawian-made materials but his products proved me wrong. One might think they are imported. The young entrepreneur has a bright future,” said the customer.
