Young Entrepreneur Earns Living Through Welding

In Dowa, a young and determined entrepreneur, Damiano Kachala has transformed his life from one of abject poverty to economic stability after he successfully launched a thriving welding business.

Kachala has told ProjectM in an interview that his journey into the world of entrepreneurship started in 2019.

“I was really struggling to make ends meet and my future looked uncertain,” said Damiano.

But in 2019, Kachala borrowed K20,000 from a friend which he used to launch a a Mandasi business.

“It was a modest beginning, but it marked the start of journey towards financial freedom,” said Kachala.

Using profits made from the Mandasi business, the entreprenuer decided to diversify and started purchasing welding equipment.

In 2021, Kachala underwent welding training under the Youth Skills Challenge, a program initiated by the government under the SSRLP Tidzidalire Project.

“The training equipped me with skills and confidence needed to launch my own welding business and indeed I did,” he said.

Currently, Kachala is an accomplished welder plying his trade at Dowa Turn-Off where he has also established a loyal customer base.

“I am now making a steady income of not less than K600,000 per month,” he added.

The talented entrepreneur plans to expand his venture by establishing other workshops across Dowa district.

Dowa district information officer Sylvester Kumwenda has hailed Kachala, calling him visionary.

“Damiano is one of talented youthful entrepreneurs we have trained under the SSRLP Tidzidalire Project and we are proud,” he said.
