YEPA GirlsTrained In Sustainable Approach To Menstrual Health

In a quest to empower girls and promote menstrual health, a Lilongwe-based organization, Girl Power for Change, has distributed reusable sanitary pads to over 500 girls from Yepa village located in the area of Traditional Authority Chitukula.

The organisation has also taken it a step further by training the girls on how to make their own reusable sanitary pads using locally available resources.

The organisation’s Executive Director Linda Phiri said the girls have been equipped with the innovative knowledge in a bid to promote environmental conservation.

According to Phiri, the organisation was alarmed by the number of girls who were dropping out of school due to fear of being ridiculed over menstrual-related issues.

“We saw it wise to engage with the girls and provide them with a sustainable solution to manage their menstruation with dignity,” Phiri said.

She said the training program has been a resounding success, with the girls happily embracing the opportunity to learn a new skill.

“By making their own reusable sanitary pads, the girls are not only gaining confidence and independence, but also contributing to a cleaner environment,” said Phiri.

One of the beneficiaries, Chisomo Chimbalanga commended Girl Power for Change for the training program, saying it has empowered her.

“By providing us with this training, this organisation has helped me to break down gender barriers that were preventing me from accessing education and reaching my full potential,” said Chimbalanga.

Girl Power for Change has managed to conduct the training with support from Thaman Aviation.
