Women Cooperative Thrives In Dairy Farming

An all women Lilongwe-based cooperative operating under the name “Mwachitsosa Producers and marketing cooperative society limited” is living its dream after investing in dairy farming.

The cooperative, based in Mingu Village in Traditional Authority Chadza, has managed to construct a modern bulking center which also houses a boardroom, offices, storeroom and cold-room where the group plans to install milk cooling tanks.

The cooperative’s chairperson Hawa Williams Makwinja has indicated that the group decided to venture into dairy farming six years ago after noticing the profits dairy farmers get.

“Our village has progressive thinking women and thats why it wasn’t that difficult to form this cooperative in 2019,” she said.

Makwinja said over the years, Mwachitsosa Producers and marketing cooperative society limited has managed to establish itself as one of the country’s reliable suppliers of dairy products.

“Currently, I can confirm that we have a stable and rewarding market with MDI-2007 Limited, a company that has been purchasing our milk for a long time now,” said Makwinja.

The cooperative has also recently added 32 dairy cattle to the initial capital it invested in 2019.

“Our focus is to cement our reputation as reliable suppliers of high-quality dairy products,” she added.

The Mwachitsosa Producers and marketing cooperative society limited’s success has not gone unnoticed as the Agricultural Commercialisation (AGCOM) has awarded the cooperative a matching grant of K133 million that has been invested in the cooperative’s management education, bookkeeping, accounting and procurement of cooling tanks.

“The cooperative’s continued win is also our win as a programme,” said AGCOM National Coordinator, DR Ted Nankhumwa.
