One of the country’s renowned female musicians and events manager Wendy Harawa has appealed to individual persons, companies and the donor community to invest in child education.
Harawa made the call on Monday when her foundation, Wendy Harawa foundation, donated 60 desks to Mkomachi L.E.A in Lilongwe.
Speaking in an interview, she said investment in child education is key to constructing better foundation for a nation.
Said Harawa: “We at Wendy Harawa Foundation realize that investing in child education is a great thing which helps to create strong foundation and sustainable future for a nation. Educated children are likely to become productive citizens.
“It is against this understanding that our foundation made a donation of 60 desks to Mkomachi primary school in Lilongwe.”
She, however, said her foundation was looking for more partners to collaborate with in order to mobilise more resources for Mkomachi and other needy schools.
“We are calling for partners to join our cause because more needy schools including Mkomachi are in need of support. This is in line with our mission to contribute towards the country’s community development.
Currently, we are mobilising 700 more desks and resources for the construction of two additional classrooms at Mkomachi because Standard 4 learners currently learn under trees,” said Harawa.
According to teachers at Mkomachi L. E. A, the school is one of the highly populated institutions with over 1,800 learners in Lilongwe but it lacks adequate resources such as infrastructure to meet the demand of learners.
In 2003, the school encountered one of the tragic accidents when three learners were killed when a tree fell on them while learning under it.
Therefore, Wendy Harawa Foundation seeks to minimise the challenges the school currently faces.
