Nkhotakota is one of the lake shore districts that most youths shun school and venture in fishing .That is according to 2022 statistics conducted by educational sub committees within the district .
For this reason, An association comprising of Vocational Skilled personnel’s have embarked on a program of teaching school dropouts about entrepreneurship.
One of the lead facilitators who is also Chairperson for Central Regional Trainer, Bashir Ziyada says the decision emanated from looking at how youths are flocking to the lake instead of engaging in sustainable entrepreneurship and he made the remarks during the handover ceremony of certificates to 35 youths who have completed their vocational trainings in various disciplines.
” It pains me observing that youths are becoming fishermen for the sake of getting small amount of money instead of concentrating on something that has a long term importance. That is why with my fellow men in various professionals such as carpentry, brick laying, mechanics and tailoring, we have joined forces aimed at teaching interested youth in the district to have vocational training skills.” Said Ziyada.
He further added that currently, he is one of the trainers in informal sector and said his aim is to see Malawi producing skilled youths who can enhance the development of the nation.
In his speech, Desk Officer for TEVET, Blessings Male commended the trainers for the program.
He said: ” As Nkhotakota council, sometimes we get people from other districts to do work which could be done by our fellow vocational skilled youths here but we do not see any. You need to be the first priority when such development comes and I urge you to be serious when you will be learning such skills.”
Meanwhile, Zayada said he will be training at least 75 youths under the first cohort for 4 months.
He added that after imparting skills to youths, he is planning on doing the same with Prisoners in Nkhotakota out of his own good will.
