VICE-PRESIDENT VOWS TO EMPOWER CREATIVE SECTOR

The government of Malawi says it will work towards revolutionising the country’s creative sector.

Vice-President Dr Michael Usi made the remarks on Tuesday in Blantyre, calling the country’s creative sector as the conscience of the people.

He made the remarks during a closed-door meeting with representatives from the music industry, arts sector and actors.

“We want the creative sector to be at the heart of the country’s development because the government believes the industry is capable,” said Usi.

The Vice-President added that during the meeting, representatives from the creative industry asked the government to facilitate a speedy tabling of the “National Arts and Heritage Council Bill” in Parliament, a thing he said the government is aware of its importance.

“We know that tabling of this bill will help to improve the welfare of artists in the country hence my appeal to them to exercise patience as we work towards finishing it,” said Usi.

On his part, representative of the creative sector Overton Chimombo thanked the Vice-President for showing his commitment to improve the welfare of artists in the country.

Dr Usi, a renowned actor, well known for his persona Manganya, officially started executing his duties as the country’s Vice-President following his appointment a few days ago to replace Dr Saulos Chilima who died in a military plane crash alongside nine others in Mzimba.
