UNIMA Graduate Creates Mosquito Repellent Lotion

University of Malawi (UNIMA) graduate Ceasar Chembezi has produced a mosquito repellent body lotion named “Sleep Well” using locally sourced natural ingredients.

This product is a result of Chembezi’s determination to address the persistent challenge of malaria in Malawi.

Chembezi, a holder of a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Chemistry, explains that “Sleep Well” provides a unique combination of protection, skin benefits, convenience, and safety.

“Mosquitoes are the main enemies of our health and the high malaria cases motivated us to embark on this project,” he said.

The 34-year-old innovator highlights the benefits of his product, including long-lasting protection of up to seven hours, gentleness, and safety for children, as well as suitability for all skin types.

“This makes it a convenient addition to people’s daily skin care routine,” he adds.

Chembezi’s project has also created employment opportunities for young people.

“Youth employment and empowerment are my top priorities. Currently, I have employed five people who are working to ensure the growth and success of the project,” he said.

With a current production capacity of 1,000 bottles per week, Chembezi aims to expand his distribution across the country and beyond. However, he faces challenges such as marketing and packaging.

“Producing high-quality and attractive branding materials is a big challenge in Malawi,” he noted.

Health expert Dr. Farouck Bonomali praised Chembezi’s initiative, saying local innovative solutions are ideal in addressing the challenge of malaria.

However, he emphasizes the importance of ensuring the product’s safety through thorough testing and compliance with regulatory standards.

Chembezi’s achievement serves as an inspiration to young and up-and-coming innovators, demonstrating the power of hard work, dedication and perseverance.
