UK Supports Malawi’s Mining Sector with New Initiative

The United Kingdom has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Malawi’s efforts to develop a transparent and inclusive mining sector.

This comes as the Presidential Delivery Unit’s Mining Lab was launched in Lilongwe during a three-day forum that brings together stakeholders to shape the future of Malawi’s mining industry.

The initiative aims to address key challenges facing the sector, including revenue transparency, environmental sustainability, and community engagement.

The Mining Lab will provide a platform for stakeholders to discuss and develop strategies for improving the governance and management of Malawi’s mining sector.

Participants will include government officials, industry experts, civil society representatives, and local community leaders.

Through this collaborative approach, the initiative seeks to ensure that Malawi’s mining sector benefits all stakeholders, particularly local communities.

British High Commissioner Fiona Ritchie emphasised the UK’s commitment to supporting Malawi’s development goals, particularly in the mining sector.

“We believe that a transparent and inclusive mining sector can play a significant role in driving economic growth and development in Malawi. The UK’s support for the Mining Lab is part of its broader commitment to promoting sustainable development in Malawi,” said Ritchie.

Vice-President of Malawi Dr. Michael Usi emphasised the need for transparency at all mining sites, ensuring that Malawians reap the full benefits of their natural resources.

“We want to ensure that our mining sector is a source of prosperity for all Malawians, not just a select few,” said Dr Usi.

He urged stakeholders to work together to develop a mining sector that is transparent, accountable, and beneficial to all.

Minister of Mining, Ken Zikhale Ng’oma hailed the platform as a potential game-changer for the sector.

“The Mining Lab will provide a unique opportunity for us to engage with stakeholders and develop strategies that will benefit all Malawians. With the UK’s support, Malawi’s mining industry is expected to play a significant role in driving economic growth and development in the country,” said Ngoma.
