The Ministry of Tourism has been awarded the Public Sector Innovation Challenge Award championed by the office of the Vice-President with financial and technical support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The ministry received the award Tuesday at the Bingu International Convention Center (BICC) in Lilongwe during the commemoration of the World Creativity and Innovation Day.
The ministry’s project titled “Tourism Digital Information Management System” has emerged successful, fending off competition from several ministries.
Receiving the award on behalf of the Ministry of Tourism, minister responsible Honourable Vera Kamtukule could not hide her excitement, describing the achievement as a milestone.
“With deep gratitude and appreciation, we thank UNDP for recognizing the importance of our project and for their generous grant of $40,000 to kick start the first phase of development,” wrote the minister on through herFacebook page.
She said the funding will be instrumental in the creation of a tourism enterprise digital inspection system which promises to address key challenges affecting the industry.
“We are excited about the transformative potential of this initiative and the positive impact it will have on our tourism sector,” Kamtukule said.
The minister added that by harnessing the power of digital technology, her ministry hopes to streamline operations, enhance efficiency and elevate the overall visitor experience.
“This Innovation system will not only improve regulatory compliance and safety standards but also empower tourism enterprise to thrive in an increasingly competitive landscape,” she added.
Kamtukule has since thanked the ministry of tourism staff for working tirelessly to clinch the award.
On her part, UNDP resident representative Ms. Fenella Frost congratulated the tourism ministry for submitting a winning project, saying the organisation is ready to work with the ministry in enhancing Innovation and strategic investment for maximum impact.
