The Tobacco Commission (TC) has disclosed that the country has realised at least US386.3 million, which is equivalent to K677 billion from the sale of 130.3 million kilogrammes of tobacco.
The development comes following the closure of Lilongwe and Limbe Auction Floors last.
Speaking in an interview Spokesperson for TC Telephorus Chigwenembe said they are impressed with the marketing season.
“As we are about to close the remaining markets, we are confident that we will close the market on a good note. As we are taking today a price of 3.7 usd per kilogramme has been recorded in Mzuzu” Chigwenembe said.
Chigwenembe said by 19 July the country had sold 29 million kilogrammes of tobacco at Mzuzu floors.
Chinkhoma Floors was already closed while Mzuzu Floors is expected to close on 2 August.
Meanwhile, a report on the third round of tobacco estimates is projects next year’s production at 129 million kilogrammes.
The report further puts production in the Northern Region at 34.6 million kilogrammes.
