Thukutalane Investments Empowers Karonga Farmers

Karonga-based food Thukutalane Investments, a processing and marketing enterprise, is making strides to empowering local farmers to produce high quality products.

Established in 2017 by entrepreneur Prosperina Shaba, Thukutalane Investments has been steadily growing its footprint in the country’s food supply industry.

The company sources an average of 5 tons of raw materials from local farmers per month, injecting much-needed capital into the local economy.

With a strong focus on social enterprise, the company prioritises the economic well-being of local farmers, particularly women who supply raw materials.

“Empowering local farmers, particularly women, is at the heart of what we do, by working together, we can create a more sustainable and equitable food industry in Malawi,” says Prosperina, founder of Thukutalane Investment.

At the heart of Thukutalane Investments’ success is its dedicated team, comprising two permanent employees and three temporary staff members.

Together, they work tirelessly to deliver freshly processed, predominantly organic food products.

The empowerment comes in various forms, including training and capacity-building programs for farmers. Thukutalane Investments provides technical assistance, access to markets, and financial support to its suppliers. This support enables farmers to increase their yields and improve the quality of their produce.

The company’s product offerings are a testament to its commitment to quality and innovation. Flagship products like Rina Sausages, Rina Cakes, Rina Kirombero Rice, Rina Specialty Coffee, Rina Beans and Rina Groundnuts have become household names, earning the company a loyal base.

But Thukutalane Investments’ ambitions do not stop at meeting local demand. The company plans to expand into the export market, capitalising on the growing demand for Malawian products globally.

“Our goal is not only to meet4 local demand but also expand to the export market, showcasing the best of Malawi’s produce to the world,” adds Shaba.

This move aligns with the Malawi government’s efforts to boost exports.

Patrick Botha, spokesperson for the Ministry of Trade and Industry notes that the government is working to increase Malawi’s exports to other countries.

Mzuzu-based customer Leah Lwinga has commended Thukutalane Investments product calling them top-notch.

“I love their products, especially the Rina Specialty Coffee. The quality is top-notch, and I appreciate the fact that I’m supporting local farmers. I have noticed a significant difference in the taste and aroma compared to other coffee brands I have tried,” said Lwinga.

Lwinga also appreciates the company’s commitment to sustainability and empowering local farmers. “It’s inspiring to see a company that prioritises the well-being of local farmers and the environment,” she adds.

Thukutalane Investments’ growth has been bolstered by its participation in a WhatsApp forum for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) facilitated by the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Institute (SMEDI).

This platform has enabled the company to network and establish crucial business-to-business linkages, further solidifying its position in the market.

SMEDI’s capacity-building interventions have also played a role in Thukutalane Investments’ success, equipping the company with the skills and knowledge needed in the food industry.
