The Voice That Sees Beyond

What if you lost your sight tomorrow? Would you give up on your dreams, or would you find a new way to shine?

Master Dawusoni, a visually-impaired gospel singer from Mimosa Mulanje, chose the latter, turning his loss of sight into a powerful testimony of faith and resilience.

Though darkness claimed his sight in 2008, it could not steal his light. Where many would have faltered, he found strength in his music, using it as a beacon of hope.

Dawusoni’s blindness came gradually, a slow blur that worsened over time.

“At first, I thought it was just temporary, but when the doctors told me that my optic nerves were completely damaged, I had to accept my new reality.” he shared in an interview with ProjectM.

Long before losing his sight, he had a deep love for music. But it was only after blindness that music became part of his story that he discovered his true gift, composing soul-lifting gospel songs. Every lyric he pens and every melody he hums weaves a tale of faith, courage, and perseverance.

With nothing but his voice and a guitar, Master Dawusoni stands before congregations, with songs that touch the deepest parts of the human soul.

“Music is my way of seeing, I may not see the people in front of me, but I feel their hearts through my songs,” he said.

Master Dawusoni is more than just a singer, he also sew clothes with remarkable precision. Feeling the fabric with his hands as if reading a story written in threads, he stitches dreams into reality.

“It’s not easy, but I refuse to sit and wait for help. I do what I can with what I have,” he said.

Without a proper sewing machine, his work is slow, yet his determination remains steadfast. In addition to his music and sewing, he sells bananas at the churches where he performs.

According to him, it is his way of connecting with people, sharing his testimony, and spreading joy. Those who hear his voice and witness his strength often offer small gestures of support, recognising his unwavering spirit.

Though challenges exist, Dawusoni refuses to be defined by them. He dreams of recording his songs professionally and reaching a wider audience with his music.

Without a manager or a full band, he carries his melodies on memory cards, performing with nothing but his voice and his trusted guitar.

Further, radio airwaves remain a distant dream, but his faith is unshaken. He knows that his voice carries power beyond the limitations he faces. His songs, born in solitude but sung in unity with those who believe are already changing lives.

“I dream of stepping into a real studio one day. I want my songs to reach beyond my village, beyond Mulanje, and touch people across the world,” he said.

Master Dawusoni walks a path that many would fear to tread, but he does so with courage and conviction.

He may not see with his eyes, yet he envisions a world where his music touches hearts across Malawi and beyond.
