TFD URGES NSANJE DEC TO PROMOTE INCLUSIVE COMMUNICATION

Tamva Friends for the Deaf (TFD), a local disability rights organization, has appealed to the District Executive Committee (DEC) members to prioritize the rights of persons with speech and hearing impairments.

During a DEC meeting, Technical Advisor Maria Charlie emphasized the vulnerability of individuals with disabilities during disasters.

“Many people with speech and hearing impairments are victims of various forms of abuse, particularly during disasters,” Charlie said.

To bridge the communication gap, TFD has established clubs in Nsanje where people can learn sign language freely.

“This initiative can break the communication challenges between persons with speech and hearing impairments and the able-bodied,” Charlie explained.

Charlie urged DEC members to take advantage of this opportunity to learn sign language, enhancing their communication with people with disabilities.

“By learning sign language, we can promote inclusivity and break down barriers,” she added.

However, McShades Dakamau, Chief Education, Youth, and Sports Officer for Nsanje, revealed a significant challenge.

“We have only six Special Needs Teachers for primary schools in the district,” Dakamau said.

Despite government advertisements for Special Needs Teachers Training, many teachers shy away from such courses.

“The office cannot force teachers to undergo training in this program,” Dakamau noted.

TFD’s efforts aim to ensure equal access to education, information, and services for persons with disabilities.

By promoting inclusive communication, Nsanje can become a more accessible and supportive community.
