Kansas city Current forward Temwa Chawinga’s brace against rival NJ/NY Gotham has secured her club a Liga MX Femenil Summer Cup.
The brace was Chawinga’s fourth in all competitions this year for the National Women’s Soccer League League all time goal scorer in a single season.
Chawinga is leading the goal tally with 20 goals in 25 games played with only one game left in the season.
The deadly stickers score last night came 25 minutes when she got behind Gotham’s defense and sent a shot that was registered as a goal.
Twelve minutes later Chawinga secured a goal again.
The Kansas City Current also won the first edition of NWSL after defeating NJ/NY Gotham in the final behind Temwa.
The Summer Cup was held primarily during the summer Olympic break for the NWSL and featured all 14 teams from the US top teams competing against six teams from Mexico.
Gotham FC and Kansas City are third and fourth in the NWSL regular season standings with a separation of a single point in the final round.
Chawinga has also been named FC25 team of the week.
Meanwhile, all eyes are on the Scorchers this afternoon as they are facing Madagascar in the COSAFA Hollywood Bets Women’s Championship.
This is a fourth meeting between the two sides at the competition with Scorchers hoping to maintain dominance.
In 2017, Malawi won 6-3 while the 2018 and 2019 encounters ended in 2-0 wins for the Scorchers.
Last year, the girls destroyed Madagascar with a 3-1.
Madagascar currently lead group B with three points after a 5-1 win against Mauritius on Wednesday while Scorchers have a point having drawn against Botswana.
Speaking in an interview Lovemore Fazili said he is upbeat that his charges will bring positive results.
“Securing victory against Madagascar last year wasn’t an easy an easy one. And we are not underrating them this time around.
He said: “The coming of TP Mazembe Sabina Thom has boosted the striking force and her presence will do something. We are looking forward to scoring more goals,” he explained.
Only group leads will advance to the knock out final stage.
