Malawi’s US-based female football striker Temwa Chawinga has been nominated for the 2024 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Golden Boot Award having taken her goal tally to 12.
Chawinga is racing now with Zambian Barbara Banda of Orlando Pride who also has 12 goals.
The lethal stricker plays for Kansas City Current for a two year deal.
In her debut season, Chawinga has won player of the month for the month of June in the NSWL league.
The 25-year-old scored in every match in June, outscoring 10 NWSL clubs on her own.
Her impressive performance has won her first trophy after beating Atlentico Madrid 1-0 in the summer Women’s Cup Champions.
Though the score came from Debinhas, Chawinga’s assist led to a goal in the 12 minutes of the match.
Chawinga’s 2-0 victory over North Carolina in the semi-final took her club to the final.
Last year, she was named as the World’s Best striker having scored 63 goals for her club and country.
She also helped Malawi’s Scorchers to win their first ever COSAFA Women’s Championship after beating Zambia 2-1 in South Africa which also earned her Player of the Tournament and Top Goal Scorer award with nine goals scored.
Meanwhile, National Women’s Football Association General Secretary, Lustica Gondwe has hailed Chawinga for her performance.
“I am very happy for her. She is a beacon of hope for upcoming players. I hope she continues to shine,” she said.
