TEMWA CLOSES IN ON BREAKING RECORD IN US

US-based Malawian women’s football star Temwa Chawinga scored two to inspire her National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) team KC Current to a 3-0 victory over Washington Spirit on Saturday.

The two goals have taken her tally to 16 goals, just two goals to equal the all-time record and three goals to break the record

On the other hand the victory also helped KC Current to qualify for national play-offs with five more games to play.

She has now taken her goal tally to 16, three above second-placed Zambian Babara Banda of Orlando Pride.

However, the Kansas City-based side remains third in the 14-team league with 42 points from 21 matches.

They are nine points behind leaders Orlando Pride and two below Washington.

Last year, Temwa was overall world top scorer with 63 goals

KC Current coach Vlatko Andonovski was quoted by the club’s website as having said: “qualifying for the play-offs makes me happy and the girls are happy.”

Meanwhile, the team celebrated the feat by posting pictures and comments on the team’s website.

One of the team’s fans, Jason Hannigan said: “Not only clinch the playoff spot but did it in an absolutely resounding fashion!! #CleanSheet and 3 goals for the win! Nobody’s coming in to #cpkcstadium and taking away the christening of the first #NWSL Championship here. The trophies are coming here and they’re going to stay here!!”

National Women’s Football Association of Malawi chairperson Adellaide Migogo said Temwa’s achievements in the US would encourage more players to aim higher.
