Tabitha Chawinga, a Malawian football star playing for Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in France, has been named the Union des Nationale Professional Footballers (UNFP) Women’s Player of the Season.
This prestigious award comes just a week after she was named French Women’s First Division Player of the Season.
Chawinga’s impressive performance has earned her top spot as D1 Arkema’s goal scorer, with 18 goals and 10 assists.
As captain of the Malawi Scorchers Women’s Football team, she has made her country proud and inspired female footballers worldwide.
Speaking with ProjectM in an interview, Lustica Gondwe, General Secretary for FAM Women’s Football has hailed Chawinga for carrying the country’s flag.
“She has shown that girls are able and Malawian footballers can also reach that far. As an association, we are very much excited because of this achievement because she has set the bar way too high for other players,” said Lustica Gondwe, General Secretary for FAM Women’s Football.
Chawinga’s previous season was marked by historic achievements, including becoming the first female player in Africa to win the Italian Women’s Footballer of the Year award. She scored 23 goals for Inter Milan in just 21 matches, winning the golden boot award.
In 2023, Chawinga scored an impressive 51 goals for her Chinese club Wuhan Jianghan, more than any other player in the world for their club side. She also scored 12 goals for the Malawi national team, finishing 24 goals clear of the second-placed player on the list.
According to the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS), Chawinga ended 2023 as the leading female goalscorer of the calendar year, the first non-European to achieve this feat. Her incredible total of 63 goals in all competitions surpassed even the leading male goalscorer, Cristiano Ronaldo, who finished with 54 goals.
