Malawi’s women’s football sensation Tabitha Chawinga is the only female African nominee for the prestigious Globe Soccer Awards in best player category.
Chawinga, who is currently making waves in the Olympique Lyonnais is among 20 outstanding female footballers nominated for the 15th edition of the awards.
Expressing her excitement in an interview, Chawinga attributed her success to Divine Intervention.
“Being the only African female nominee adds to the thrill. This a remarkable achievement and i attribute it to the Lord Almighty,” she said.
The 20 nominees also include players like Lauren James, Grace Geroyo, Mayra Ramirez and Lucy Bronze.
Chawinga’s nomination comes days after she recently after her and sister Temwa Chawinga were also ranked top 20 players in the ESPN as the best players for the season.
The male category has two African players, Liverpool star Mohammed Salah and Nigeria’s Italy-based Ademola Lookman.
Since moving to her French club, she has scored 6 goals and 4 assists in 10 games she has played for her club.
She also broke a record as the first Malawian player to be ranked number 16 in the world’s best player in the Balon D’or.
The the awards are scheduled for December 27 in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.
Tabitha Chawinga has made history with her achievement in recent seasons.
In the 2022-2023 season, she won the prestigious Serie A Female Footballer of the Year award.
Last season, she took her talent to new heights, emerging as the Division 1 Féminine Player of the Year.
This remarkable feat not only solidified her position as one of the top players in the league but also a milestone.
Chawinga became the first Malawian and African player to be nominated for this award.
