At least six teams are expected to compete for the 2023 HTD Beach Soccer National Championship from 25 to 26 May at Sunbird Nkopola beach in Mangochi.
The qualified teams include Noil and Deep Bay from Karonga, Beach Eagles representing Nkhatabay district, Vinthenga in Nkhotakota, Tourism from Central Region while Sunbird Nkopola comes from the South Region.
Following the draw for the competition that took place at HTD Limited offices in Blantyre on Thursday, teams such as Noil, Vinthenga and Beach Eagles are in group A of the tournament while group B has Deep Bay, Tourism and Sun Bird Nkopola.
Beach Soccer Association of Malawi General Secretary Wakisa Mwambetania has said the association is geared to wind up the competition and start the 2024 season.
‘’As you are aware, the long awaited competition has been delayed due to high water levels along the lake shores as floods damaged the venues but all is set for the tournament,” Mwambetania said.
According to Football Association of Malawi (FAM) Marketing and Broadcasting Manager Tulipo Mwenelupembe, the top two teams from each group will qualify for the semi-finals.
Meanwhile, HTD sales executive Mangaliso Mwanza says he is looking forward to an entertaining competition.
The tournament, which was scheduled to be held in Karonga, will be hosted in Mangochi because of the rising water levels on the beaches of Lake Malawi.
