Asimenye Simwaka Malawi’s top athlete alongside swimmers Tayamika Chang’anamuno and Fillepe Gomes left the country on Sunday for the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics Games in France.
This follows her outstanding performance in the 23rd African Senior Athletics Championship in Douala, Cameroon last month.
Simwaka came third in the 200m category which earned her a bronze medal.
Speaking in an interview the versatile athlete, who is also the Malawi National Women’s Football Team forward, said she was thrilled to be among those that are carrying Malawi’s flag.
“I am looking forward to leaving a mark at this years Olympic Games and am very confident that I will do well. I also appreciate all the support that has come my way,” she said.
In his remarks, coach Pachisi Nyasulu said Simwaka has been going through training making her fit for the competition.
“We have been doing all the necessary activities that will help her run fast when she’s starting. I am confident that she will represent us well,” he said .
Simwaka will compete in the100m category and she has left the country alongside two other swimmers namely Chang’anamuno and Gomes.
In 2021, she was the country’s flag bearer at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo in the 100m category.
As a token of appreciation for their work, Standard Bank rewarded Simwaka with K300,000 while her coach received K100,000 at this years Be More Race Standard Bank edition.
