SIMWAKA, 2 OTHERS EYE OLYMPIC GAMES

Athletes Asimwenye Simwaka, Stain Liffa and Sunganani Makonje will carry the country’s flag in the Olympics qualifiers games in Zambia.

The trio left the country on Thursday having qualified for Olympic Games after their successful performance in All African Games in March.

Asimenye and Stain Lifa will compete in 100m and 200m events while  Makonje will participate in the 800m.

Speaking with ProjectM in an interview, Asimenye said she is optimistic that she will perform well.

“I am so excited to have qualified for this, and I will do my best so that I qualify for Olympic Games,” she explained.

In his remarks, Nicholas Nyirenda, General Secretary for Athletics Malawi, hailed the trio for qualifying.

“I must upload the trio for reaching this far. We are expecting that they will win so that they proceed to the next level,” he said.

In 2022, Stain Lifa and Asimenye Simwaka were among the 22 athletes that represented Malawi at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in England.

During the Commonwealth Games in 2022, Simwaka was the first Malawian athlete to have reached the final of 400m and semi-finals of 200m.

Last year, she came first in 200m and 400m during the World Athletics Championship qualifiers in Gaborone.

Should the trio qualify, they will participate in the Olympic Games scheduled for August in Japan.
