The Malawi Women’s National Football Team, the Scorchers have named the final 23-player squad ahead of two FIFA-sanctioned friendly matches against Zambia.
The matches will be played in Lusaka with the first game scheduled for Saturday, February 22, and the second on Tuesday, February 25, at Woodlands Stadium.
Head coach Lovemore Fazili expressed optimism about his team’s chances despite that the Copper Queens are well exposed.
“We are excited for these friendlies. It is a great opportunity for us to test our team against a high-quality side like Zambia, especially ahead of upcoming competitions,” said Fazili.
The Scorchers will travel with a blend of local and foreign-based players, with the delegation leaving for Lusaka on Tuesday. Four foreign-based players are expected to join the team from their respective clubs.
Among the players joining the squad are USA-based forward Temwa Chawinga as well as the DRC-based duo, Sabina Thom and Chimwemwe Madise.
Said Fazili: “We’ve been preparing intensively, and we are confident the players will bring their A-game.
“It’s important for us to have a mix of experienced and young talent, and I believe this squad is well-balanced.”
The squad also boasts key players from international clubs, including captain Tabitha Chawinga, who plays for French club Olympique Lyonnais Féminin.
Said Chawinga: “I’m looking forward to playing these friendlies with the team. It’s always a pleasure to represent Malawi, and these matches will be crucial for us as we aim to improve ahead of our competitive fixtures.”
Other notable players in the squad, include Rose Kabzere (Montpellier), Vannessa Chikupira (FC BIIK-Kazygurt), and Faith Chimzimu (Ascent Academy) and have been key figures in their respective teams.
The team is expected to depart today with other international players expected to join the team on Wednesday.
