Amid continued scarcity of jobs on the market, a Rumphi-based youthful entrepreneur, Lumbani Gerald Khembo is turning his skills and passion into a thriving business empire.
The holder of Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural economics from the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR), a Diploma in Agriculture from Mwimba College of Agriculture and numerous professional certificates, is the founder and director of LUWECO Fresh Food Mart, a company that specialises in rearing cattle and supply of fresh food products across Malawi.
He has told ProjectM in an interview that his vast training in agriculture refined his skills and shaped up his vision of venturing into entrepreneurship.
“Amid pressing issue of high unemployment rate, especially among graduates, I decided to follow a different path by using my Agricultural skills acquired from school to establish my own company,” said Khembo.
He said in August, 2021, LUWECO Fresh Food Mart was successfully launched and registered under the business registration acts of Malawi.
“And since then, LUWECO has become a platform for creating sustainable employment, turning education into action and a bridge between qualifications and real life opportunities,” said Khembo.
Currently, the company has thrived and is dominating in the supply of premium locally sourced food products.
Through his company, Khembo has employed people with dozens others undergoing university facilitated internships at his entity.
“To my fellow youth, whether employed or still searching for a job, I urge you to take charge of your future and don’t just wait for opportunities,” he added.
His vision is to see LUWECO Fresh Food Mart transform the fresh food market by consistently offering consumers in Malawi and beyond the highest quality local products.
Small-scale Business Operators Association of Malawi executive director, Tennyson Mulimbula has hailed Khembo for managing to navigate through what he described as a tricky business atmosphere.
He has called on Malawians to support him, saying he has the potential to transform the fresh food market sector.
