Roundtable Donates Wheelchairs to QECH

In a move aimed at easing mobility challenges for patients at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH), Roundtable Blantyre 20 in collaboration with CFAO Mobility Malawi and Blantyre Cycling Crew on Saturday donating 10 wheelchairs worth K3.7 million to the hospital’s Orthopedic Centre.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Roundtable Blantyre 20 secretary Mayamiko Kapanda said the initiative was driven by the organisation’s desire to give back to the community.

Said Kapanda: “When we learned about the mobility challenges at the central hospital, we decided to do something.

“We hope these wheelchairs will help those in need. Partnering with CFAO Mobility Malawi made this initiative even more impactful.”

The donation is expected to improve the quality of care for patients who struggle to move independently while also easing the burden on hospital staff.

Alex Jambo, senior orthopaedic technician at QECH expressed gratitude for the timely support.

“They have come at a time when our resources are stretched. It’s a huge boost for both staff and patients,” he said.

The hospital continues to face a shortage of mobility equipment with many patients waiting for wheelchairs to support their treatment and recovery.

The donated wheelchairs will help fill a critical gap in service delivery at one of the busiest public hospitals in Malawi.

QECH matron Wezzie Mwafulirwa said the donation not only meets a practical need but also offers hope.

“There are many patients that need wheelchairs. This gesture shows that we are not alone and will bring real change to many families. We hope this is the beginning of a lasting partnership,” she said.

The organisations behind the donation have hinted at future collaborations as they continue to explore ways of supporting health institutions and vulnerable communities across the country.
