Restoring the Environment Through Tree Seedlings

A Thyolo-based environmental organisation, Posiye Gardens is making a difference by cultivating and selling fruit and natural tree seedlings along with vegetable seedlings like tomatoes, onions, okra and green pepper.

While the organisation generates income through seedling sales, its mission extends beyond profit, it actively engages in environmental restoration and youth empowerment.

On January 24, 2025, Posiye Gardens collaborated with the government and traditional leaders to donate 200 tree seedlings to Nantchefu Primary School and nearby villages.

The initiative aligns with Malawi’s National Tree Planting Season, which promotes afforestation to combat the impact of climate change and protect the country’s soil.

Speaking to ProjectM, Posiye Gardens Chairman Henderson Namwali emphasised the urgency of reforestation.

“Malawi’s changing weather patterns remind us that we have lost much of our vegetative cover. Through collective efforts, we can restore our environment and mitigate the impact climate change effects,” he said.

The organisation not only plants trees but also creates job opportunities for individuals particularly young people managing daily operations, from nursery maintenance to tree distribution.

“As young people, we need to take charge of our future. Working here has given me an opportunity to contribute to environmental restoration while earning a living,” said one of the employees at the nursery.

Group Village Headman Namilonje, who was present during the tree donation, expressed gratitude for Posiye Gardens’ contribution saying: “These trees are not just for today but for our children and future generations. We will strengthen our community by-laws to protect them.”

Thyolo District Director of Environment and Natural Resources, Miriam Yona, applauded Posiye Gardens for complementing the government’s goal of planting one million trees this season.

Through its efforts, the organisation is not only preserving the environment but also empowering communities to take an active role in conservation.

The tree-planting campaign aligns with Malawi’s National Tree Planting Season, an annual government initiative to improve environmental sustainability and prevent soil erosion.

Posiye Gardens continues to play a vital role in reforestation efforts, raising awareness and providing seedlings to help restore the land.
