Renowned philanthropist, social media personality and writer Stanley Onjezani Kenani has launched an appeal for donation to help veteran musician, Sir Paul Banda who used to rely on his late brother Sir Lucius Banda for financial support.
Onjezani Kenani has also launched the initiative to help Banda pay his medical bills for kidney problem treatment he is currently undergoing through.
Announcing the initiative through his Facebook (Meta) platform and X (Formerly Twitter), Kenani said he has decided to spearhead the initiative as one way of honouring the life of Sir Banda, who he has described as a legend in the music industry.
“Last week, we buried his young brother, Lucius, the singular pillar of his support, He himself is unwell, smitten- it turns out – by the same illness that felled his brother, kidney problems,” Kenani said through a statement.
Kenani added that to survive, Sir Banda relies on a dialysis machine, found currently at the Queen Elizabeth Central hospital, a process which he said requires a huge financial muscle.
“Twice a week he must find himself there and these trips, plus the general care of his condition, need money,” said Kenani.
Currently, the initiative which begun on Sunday, has raised over K7 Million as of Friday morning, 12 July 2024.
The initiative remains open until Tuesday next week and prospective donors are being urged to make donations via National Bank of Malawi account number 1855988, Airtel money number 0999604048 or TNM Mpamba number 0882187044.
Sir Paul Banda is credited with helping the country’s music industry thrive by among others, forming Alleluya Band, a music group which nurtured a lot of artists including, Lucius Banda, Billy Kaunda, Mlaka Maliro, Coss Chiwalo, Paul Chaphuka and Isaac Liwotcha, just to mention a few.
His soothing voice has also made a lot of Malawians crave for local music.
