Relief Efforts in Nathenje Provide Lifeline Amidst Adversity

The residents of Nathenje in Lilongwe have received much-needed relief in the wake of recent calamities, thanks to a food distribution initiative by Teethsavers International Malawi.

While the organization’s primary focus has always been oral health, its timely intervention to address the immediate food crisis in the community has made a significant impact.

The heavy rains from the previous month devastated crops and livelihoods, leaving many families struggling to survive.

Speaking in an interview during the distribution at Nathenje Primary School on Wednesday, Catherine Chanika from Dilawo Village said the relief is timely.

“The rains took away so much from us and the assistance has come at a time when food stocks were exhausted, It is a blessing that this support arrived when we needed it most.” She said.

Lucas Chiphadzi, another beneficiary from Wilson Village, spoke about the profound effect the relief has had on his family.

“Before this, my children were going to school on empty stomachs. “Now, we have food to eat, and I can shift my focus back to farming instead of constantly worrying about where our next meal will come from.” He said.

The support from Teethsavers International Malawi has not only eased immediate suffering but also sparked hope for the future.

Senior Group Kamundi, a local leader, voiced the collective relief of the community, noting the catastrophic losses endured by local families.

“The rains destroyed our crops and even our animals, leaving us with nothing. This food aid has been a lifesaver, and I am hopeful that we will rebuild with continued support.” She explained

Teethsavers International Malawi’s Country Director, Fred Sambani, acknowledged the unprecedented nature of the crisis and emphasized the organization’s commitment to helping in times of need.

“While we are known for our work in promoting oral hygiene, we could not ignore the food shortages caused by last month’s floods. “These rains have left families without homes or food, so we responded by mobilizing resources for aid.”

Through this initiative, the organization provided 20kg bags of maize flour to 246 households, although many more families are still in need.

“Out of the 531 households affected by the floods, we have reached 246 so far,” Sambani said. But more help is required to reach those who remain without assistance.”

Founded in 2009, Teethsavers International Malawi has expanded its scope of work beyond dental care to include humanitarian support during crises.

The organization is now appealing to other well-wishers and organizations to join their efforts in providing further relief to this community in need.
