President Chakwera Calls for Media, Government Collaboration

Government has implored the country’s media to take a leading role in the restoration of public trust in public institutions.

President Lazarus Chakwera made the appeal on Saturday at the Mzuzu State Lodge during a special breakfast organised to celebrate World Press Freedom Day.

Chakwera said the mainstream media remains vital in tackling misinformation and disinformation that has thrived due to the rise in the use of various social media platforms.

He said time has come for the country’s media industry to join forces with government in eradicating misinformation and disinformation.

“We need to work together because if we don’t, the little trust the general public has in both the government and the mainstream media will continue to rapidly decline,” he said.

The President then urged the media to ensure accuracy, fairness and balance in reporting

“I urge you to be professional and refrain from relying on unverified social media narratives,” said Chakwera.

On his part, Media Institute for Southern Africa (MISA)-Malawi chairperson, Golden Matonga thanked Chakwera for providing a platform for the media to thrive.

“We have seen you appearing on local podcasts and other media outlets answering questions, we don’t take that for granted,” said Matonga.

Activities to mark the climax of World Press Freedom Day include a freedom march, a panel discussion, media capacity building and annual media awards gala dinner.
