People living around Lengwe National Park in Chikwawa have been urged to join hands in working together with Wildlife officials in the conservation of the environment.
Division Manager for Lower Shire Division, Wisely Kawaye made the revelations during the elections of the Lengwe National Park committee at Nchalo in the district.
Speaking to ProjectM, Kawaye said there is a need to good relationship between the communities and Wildlife personal for the effective conservation of the environment.
” As department we have introduced initiative such as goat pass-on to communities staying around the protected to uplift their livelihoods,” said Kawaye.
Senior Chief Chapananga hailed the Department of Wildlife and Parks for organizing elections for the committees.
He said only if there is cordial relationships between people and officials it will reduce the destruction of the environment.
Chapananga also said the locals who are engaged in charcoal burning, cutting down trees carelessly are the destruction of things,” he said.
” People have started bearing fruits from the goat pass-on initiative which is improving lifes,” he said.
In his remarks the newly elected chair Sofoliano Gweta promised to carry out his duties effectively.
He said the communities are benefiting alot from the four maize mills which were were sunk by Lengwe National Park.
” We have built clinics in four Traditional Authorities Ngabu, Ndakwera, Chapananga and Lundu with the resources of the 25% from the mills,” said Gweta.
Lengwe National Park covers an area of 884 square kilometers.
