Partnership For Progress: MTC And FAMA Unite Malawi’s Tourism And Creative Industry

In an inspiring move to enhance Malawi’s tourism and creative sector, the Malawi Tourism Council (MTC) and the Film Association of Malawi (FAMA) have formalized a partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This strategic alliance aims to leverage the power of audiovisual storytelling to promote the country’s rich cultural heritage and scenic beauty.

On a promising day, April 22, 2025, representatives from both organisations gathered to sign the MOU, marking the beginning of a collaborative initiative dedicated to enhancing Malawi’s profile on the global stage. The partnership is poised to create a vibrant ecosystem where tourism and film association intertwine, fostering new opportunities for both industries.

The MOU outlines key areas of collaboration, including the co-production of tourism-themed films, the branding of cultural sites and professional development for creatives. By harnessing the strengths of both organisations, MTC and FAMA plan to produce captivating documentaries and promotional videos that showcase Malawi as a premier travel destination.

One of the cornerstones of this partnership is the commitment to training and capacity building. MTC will facilitate access to various tourism sites, enabling filmmakers to capture the essence of Malawi’s landscapes and communities. In turn, FAMA will lead the creative aspects of production, ensuring that the narratives reflect authentic cultural experiences while adhering to industry standards.

As part of their joint efforts, both organisations will also engage in digital campaigns to promote tourism and culture, advocating for policies that support film tourism linkages. By working together, MTC and FAMA aim to influence decision-makers and highlight the significant role that the film industry can play in national branding.

The partnership is not only about generating content but also fostering community engagement and ensuring that local populations benefit from the tourism and film industries. Initiatives will be put in place to support communities involved in filming, ensuring they have a stake in the projects that showcase their heritage.

A Joint Working Group will oversee the implementation of the MOU, ensuring that activities are well-coordinated and aligned with the goals of both parties. Regular updates and public communications will keep stakeholders informed of progress and outcomes.

This MOU is a testament to the shared vision of MTC and FAMA, both dedicated to enhancing Malawi’s cultural and economic landscape. As they embark on this journey together, the collaboration promises to not only elevate the tourism sector but also enrich the creative industry, paving the way for a more dynamic and interconnected future for Malawi.

With the ink barely dry on the agreement, the excitement is concrete. Both organisations are ready to harness their collective expertise, creativity and passion to tell the world about the wonders of Malawi.
