Painting with the mouth, a story of excellence

Just like any human being, Chrissford Chayera was born a normal child but in around the 80’s he was affected by polio which paralyzed his legs and hands.

The situation was beyond control that he could no longer use his legs and hands but within the tragic midst, Chayera discovered his in born talent of arts specifically in drawing pictures and painting.

In an interview with ProjectM, during a visit to one of his working places at Bingu International Convention Center (BICC) entries in Lilongwe, Chayera who draws and paints pictures using his mouth, says is a living proof that proves that a person with disability cannot have limits of exploring and contributing to the development of his life and the nation.

“I was born a normal person but after polio made me crippled, I did not allow the situation to haunt me and shun my attention of drawing as well painting pictures because it was already in my mind. I never attended any school of arts or learned from anyone else but I pushed through the myths of going beyond looking down on myself as a person with disability.” Says Chayera.

He says through his art work, he has built houses and bought several cars just like any other hard working person created by God.

However, the Arts artist has pleaded with government to consider establishing Galleries that would give a platform for selling their materials saying currently, it is a challenge to sell their arts in specific designated places.

He said,
“Throughout my career development, I have realized that it is still a challenge for Malawians to buy a drawing or painting at a reasonable price just to decorate it in a house. Most people who buy the paintings are foreigners. My plea is for government through Ministry of Tourism to consider establishing a gallery that will be entitled for us Arts artists in the country to sell our products easily.”

Chayera says his main vision is to create a school of Arts that will incorporate every person interested in drawing and paintings, adding that he realizes the importance of sharing skills and knowledge in the world of arts.

He is always available at BICC and his phone numbers for any business are 0999 223406 or 0888923260.
