In a bid to combat climate change and help survivors overcome the anxiety that comes with climate-induced disasters, an organization called Green Girls Platform (GGP) has established safe spaces in Mbuna, Nkhotakota, where girls can voice their climate anxieties.
The organization says the safe spaces will also be used to share stories, teach and learn about the environment.
A statement signed by GGP Executive Director Joy Munthali has indicated that the initiative will also help girls to share their hopes and dreams.
“After the devastating floods in February and March 2024, we thought it wise to set up these safe spaces because we believe they will provide a creative space for girls to share their hopes and dreams,” Munthali said through the statement.
Through the project, over 100 girls will also be provided with dignity packs that will include menstrual pads, clothes, shoes and soap, just to mention a few.
“We are also hoping to rope in individuals that can help with climate education and psychosocial care,” said Munthali.
Through the initiative, the organization is hoping to turn eco-anxiety being faced by the girls into eco-action.
The girls are among others being implored to present ideas that can help to combat climate change in art form and other creative ways.
“We believe this will help to empower the next generation of environmental leaders, ensuring that every girl has a voice and a safe space to learn, grow and thrive,” She added.
Meanwhile, renowned environmental activist Maloto Chimkombero has commended GGP for implementing the initiative saying it will help to transform the mindset of girls towards issues of climate change.
Earlier this year, Nkhotakota district was hit with devastating floods that wreaked havoc, destroying property worthy millions and killing several people in the process.
