A group of like-minded organisations, Waste Advisors, Art Malawi and Chibuku Malawi have joined forces to launch a project called “Building Better Project”.
Through the initiative, the organisations are transforming waste products into sustainable education tools, including desks for under-privileged schools.
Waste Advisors project officer responsible for Lilongwe, Geoffrey Mphangano said the initiative was launched as one way of responding to the growing threat of environmental degradation being caused by unsustainable disposal of waste materials.
“We are organisations that are driven by passion for sustainability By launching this recycling project, we are reducing landfill waste and promoting circular economy,” he said.
The project collects plastic waste from communities and transforms it into eco-friendly desks.
“We are not just making desks. We are building a better future for Malawi’s children,” said Mphangano.
Talented artists from Art Malawi design and decorate the desks, incorporating educational messages and vibrant colours.
Chibuku Malawi largely provides logistical support, ensuring the desks reach intended schools.
Environmental expert Maloto Chimkombero has hailed the organisations for coming up with the initiative, saying time has come for Malawians to realise that education and environmental conservation can thrive together.
“This initiative has the potential to prove that waste can be a valuable resource if well utilised,” said Chimkombero.
Several schools in the Central, Southern and Northern regions are earmarked to benefit from the project.
