Organisation Moves In To Combat Adult Illiteracy

In a bid to promote adult literacy and empowerment, a Chikwawa-based organisation Community Focus (COFO) has taken an initiative to eliminate adult illiteracy in the district.

COFO has launched an initiative called “On the way to Learning Success”, adult literacy sessions targeting community members with a zeal for learning.

The organisation’s executive director Joshua Malunga has told ProjectM in an interview that the initiative has been launched in selected schools across Chikwawa District with an aim of providing a platform for community members to acquire essential knowledge and skills.

According to Malunga, the initiative seeks to bridge the education gap and foster a culture of lifelong learning.

“We hope what we are doing here will in the long run bridge the education gap and foster a culture of lifelong learning,” he said.

Malunga said the adult literacy sessions are designed to be interactive and engaging, with focus on practical skills and knowledge.

“Participants will have an opportunity to learn from experienced instructors and engage with colleagues who share similar goals and aspirations,” he said.

COFO’s initiative has been met with enthusiasm and support from the local community.

“I never had the chance to attend school when I was young, but thanks to COFO, I will now learn and improve my life,” said Elisha Gutsu, a community member taking part in the initiative.

Adult literacy expert Island Mtambo has hailed COFO, saying what the organisation is doing aligns with the country’s goals of promoting education and reducing illiteracy.

“Education is the key to unlock individual and community potential and should be encouraged,” he said.
