Nurse Swaps Career With Poultry Farming

Kasungu-based entrepreneur Lines Kalonga is making waves in the poultry industry.

The former nurse turned full-time farmer has built a thriving business selling both local and hybrid chickens.

Kalonga’s journey into farming began in 2017 and has over 700 chickens. She was inspired by her late mother, who took a bold leap of faith from a comfortable accounting career to pursue her agricultural dreams.

“I was inspired by my mother’s courage and passion for farming, she taught me that with hard work and dedication, anything is possible,” said Kalonga.

With a team of four dedicated staff members, Kalonga’s farm has grown significantly since its inception. Her customers applaud the quality of her chickens and eggs.

Nelia Katuka, a loyal customer, praised Kalonga’s eggs, saying, “The eggs from Lines’ farm are always fresh and delicious, I prefer them over any other eggs in the market,” said Katuka.

According to her, the decision to leave her nursing career behind and focus on farming has paid off. Her farm is now a go-to destination for those seeking high-quality poultry products.

As she looks to the future, Kalonga dreams of expanding her operations to become one of the biggest poultry suppliers in the region.

“My vision is to establish two mega poultry farms, increasing my production capacity and meeting the growing demand for poultry products. I want to be a leader in the industry, providing employment opportunities and contributing to the local economy,” said Kalonga.

With her passion, dedication, and commitment to excellence, Lines Kalonga is well on her way to achieving her goal.

Meanwhile, Agricultural expert Peter Mwitha notes that the poultry industry in Malawi has the potential to contribute to economic development despite facing challenges such as disease management and limited access to funding.

“Farmers can access support through government initiatives, NGOs, and private sector partnerships,” Mwitha said.

Mwitha added that agriculture plays a vital role in Malawi’s local economy, providing employment and contributing to food security.

The government has established programs to support farmers, including the Agricultural Sector Wide Approach and the Malawi Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation.

Kalonga has further urged women and young ladies not only to focus on their career but also try other avenues.
