A Ntchisi-based farmer, Jameson Mvula, has transitioned from subsistence farming to commercial.
Mvula, based from Masimbe Village harvested more than 1,500 bags of maize last growing season, a record yield in his farming life after cultivating a 20-acre land.
He has told ProjectM in an interview that he took a risk by investing K9 million through a loan he obtained from the state owned National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF). But it has since paid off.
“I have been a subsistence farmer for a long time and I became tired by a lack of progress; hence, my decision to borrow a farming loan from NEEF,” said Mvula
Through the investment, Mvula has managed to employ several people who are now running his 20-acre farm.
“What happened last growing season has instantly transformed my life and I can now confidently say I am one of very few farmers in the country who the nation can look up to in terms of food,” he said.
Mvula plans to use part of his proceeds to purchase a tractor to enhance his farming operations in the next growing season.
“I will also create a food basket for people in my village, a dream I have long cherished,” he added.
Meanwhile, renowned agricultural expert Felix Jumbe has hailed Mvula’s transformation, calling it remarkable.
“This is a remarkable story and I am really impressed,” he said.
